The narrative centers around Tião, a strong and cheerful mulatto who works on a plantation. His life is simple and filled with hard work, camaraderie, and music. However, everything changes when he falls in love with the daughter of his boss, captivated by her 'eyes of moonlight.' This love, though pure and intense, is socially unacceptable due to the racial and class differences between them.

The song vividly describes Tião's transformation as he experiences love for the first time, feeling both joy and sorrow. Despite the societal barriers, he confesses his feelings to the girl, who reciprocates his love.
