Dream Your Life Away
John Lefler
The sun comes up, its a beautiful day
Wake yourself up with a smile
You spend the afternoon in your living room
To put the world off for awhile
The clock looks down on your thinning hair
'Til the hands fall to the floor.
And your best-laid schemes take a second seat
To a joke that you've heard before.
With real life on the TV set
Fantasies that you'll soon forget
While you were sitting on a winning bet
And it doesn't mean a thing to you.
So dream your life away
Don't let the sun fall on your skin
Keep your worry deep within you and believe
Your day will come
The world will knock upon your door
Everything will work out just the way you planned
I've had all the luck
Had every chance since I remember
And you, with arms so wide
Kept me inside
And kept me together
But I'm an ordinary guy
Forgettable and plain
It doesn't really matter
We all give up someday
Well take a look around
So here's your pot of gold
A life of disappointment
A life of getting old
Another great day that you frittered away
Another song that you'll never sing
Still you steady yourself for the great reward
That your luck will surely bring
Its always too hot, or too cold
A little loud, a little low
But never quite the way you like
Just keep your hands to yourself, knowing somebody else
Is gonna make everything alright
With real life on a TV show
A fantasy that you can't let go
You're disappointing everyone you know
And it doesn't mean a thing to you
So dream your life away
Don't let the sun fall on your skin
Keep your worry deep within you and believe
Your day will come
The world will knock upon your door
Everything will work out jut the way you planned
