The Glamorous Life of a Rockstar: LISA's Anthem of Confidence
The song 'Rockstar' is a celebration of the rapper's lifetime of success, wealth and influence. The lyrics highlight LISA's confidence and pride in her abilities and achievements, even with the media scrutiny throughout the rapper's career. Right from the start of the song, with the line 'Gold teeth sittin' on the dash, she a rockstar', the artist already establishes her high status and luxurious lifestyle. The reference to the gold teeth on the dashboard of the car is a metaphor for the ostentation and wealth she possesses.
LISA also prides herself on her ability to influence other artists, as mentioned in 'Make your favorite singer wanna rap, baby, la, la'. This shows her impact on the music industry, where even singers from other genres want to follow her example. Also in the chorus, the verses 'La, La Lisa' function as a very clever reference to the singer's full name, Lalisa: this is not her given name, but she changed it because a fortune teller told her that this name would bring her prosperity.
In addition, the line 'Lisa, can you teach me Japanese? I said: はい、はい' highlights her ability to be multilingual, as the rapper speaks Thai, English, Korean, Chinese and Japanese, as well as demonstrating her connection to different cultures, reinforcing her versatility and global reach. 'い、はい' (pronounced 'hai, hai') is a Japanese expression that can be translated as "yes, yes" in English. It is used to show that you are listening and agreeing with what someone is saying, similar to "got it, got it" or "alright, alright".
'Been MIA, BKK so pretty' has a double meaning: MIA can mean Miami, since anywhere in the world that LISA arrives at automatically becomes hers, as in the line 'Every city that I go is my city'. Another possible interpretation is that MIA also means 'Missing In Action': this expression is mainly used in military contexts to refer to a soldier who is missing during a combat mission and whose status is unknown.
In this sense, 'Rockstar' marks LISA's first solo single in three years, since her last release was 'Lalisa' in 2021. In the same verse, BKK stands for 'Bangkok', indicating LISA's place of birth and perhaps where the rapper has been for the past three years. The song's production, which mixes elements of hip-hop and electronica, perfectly complements the message of power and success that LISA wants to convey.
The music video - with cyberpunk settings in Bangkok, Chinatown and Yaowarat Road, all in Thailand - as well as impressive choreography, adds a visual layer that further enriches the experience of the song. 'Rockstar' is the debut single from LISA's new era, released on the label that the artist herself founded, LLOUD.
