Roberto Vidal Roberto Vidal

School Apron

I waited for you at the hour of the sun...
and it was sad to think you might not show,
but no... you were there...
how great to hear you laughing too!
The bell marked the end of school,
you walked away from the group smiling
and it was envy, maybe... it was envy
to know another girl was dying of love.

We crossed the ditch sometimes
and your hand trembled in mine...
not thinking that the dreams
of yesterday were dying...
your dream, my dream
and all the past...

Your waiting was pure in the afternoon:
the apron that tightened on my arm...
not thinking that the years, perhaps
hurt us the same,
and in you, I would die...
that apron.

You handed me your books and I...
not knowing or understanding, flipped through the pages
where I found... the carnation
and the phrase from yesterday: "I’ll never love another..."
But time erased that school,
the ditch got lost far... far...
and it was sad, maybe... it was so sad
to know that you weren’t and we weren’t together...
