El Comparon
Zacarías Ferreira
The Misadventures of a Boastful Drunkard
Zacarías Ferreira's song "El Comparon" tells a humorous and cautionary tale about a boastful and reckless man who finds himself in a series of unfortunate and comical situations due to his behavior. The protagonist of the song is described as a braggart, a drunkard, and someone who often finds himself in trouble. The narrative begins with him going to a disco without any money, hoping to convince the waiter to let him pay the next day. However, the waiter, described as a tough guy, doesn't fall for his trick and gives him a beating, leaving him with a black eye.
Undeterred by his first mishap, the protagonist moves on to another disco. There, he makes the mistake of approaching a woman on the dance floor, not realizing she is the wife of a colonel. This leads to another confrontation, and he ends up getting beaten again. The song's chorus, "Agarrame eso alli," which translates to "Hold this for me," humorously underscores his repeated attempts to get out of trouble, only to find himself in deeper trouble each time.
The final misadventure occurs when the protagonist, now at the Malecón, kisses a beautiful woman on the cheek without her consent. Unfortunately for him, she turns out to be a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and doesn't tolerate his disrespectful behavior. She attacks him, adding to his series of beatings. Through these humorous and exaggerated scenarios, Ferreira's song serves as a playful reminder of the consequences of boastful and reckless behavior, highlighting the importance of respect and humility in social interactions.
