God is Still on Our Side
Nuns hand out food to those who haven't gotten their checks
others settle for selling tissues at the stoplights
but the streets fill up at night with poets and drunks
and people lighting lighters on the palms of their hands.
Even if I've never said it
I've always thought it
God is still on our side.
The shop windows full of relics and rosaries
and sunglasses that don’t stop the day from being cloudy.
A dog with one black eye and the other white
looks at me and barks, knowing what I’m thinking.
Even if it seems unbelievable
the rumor has been confirmed
God is still on our side.
Bets are being placed:
Can things get any worse?
Everything’s spinning
Or is it just me spinning?
We’ll see each other on the 9th at "the line of miracles"
we’ll say goodbye to bad luck by kissing the Saint’s feet
then we’ll head to the hills and go singing
that song about a caged bird.
Even if I've never said it
I've always thought it
God is still on our side.
