Ode À L'amour
Abd Al Malik
Ode to Love
There was a time when I judged my neighbor
If their life wasn’t close to mine
But now my heart welcomes every form
It’s a meadow for the gazelles
A cloister for the monks
A temple for the idols
A Kaaba for the pilgrim
The tables of the Torah and the book of the Quran
I profess the religion of love and whatever
Direction its steed takes, this religion is my faith and my creed
I’ve seen that the book of life isn’t just made of ink and letters
My heart turns white as snow
When I taste the flavors of I love you
In your garden, the flowers are many but the water is one
Let me wear your love like a tunic
Let me string the rosary of my heart in your memory
Let me shout to the world the scent of my desire
The cement of providence binds us like the bricks of a secret
I was copper, you turned me to gold, you the Alchemist of my heart
You who erased my mistakes
You reached out your hand one day and since then I’ve been rich
In truth, who is poor, who is rich?
I would leave adorned with the jewels you’ve given me
Isn’t it you, Sidi, who made me alive in this life (repeat)
Chorus (x2):
Love, an ocean without bottom, without shore
It’s the secret hidden in the heart of the wise
For all eternity you’ve tied
The wonderful story of humanity
My heart was pierced by a ray of sunshine
Not the star that shines for all, the one that awakens souls
Only he who loves another as himself is a believer
Existence is a gift but too few marvel
Because the clothes it wears are never the same
Because appearances only deceive those who stop to look
I drank the wine of Love, people turned into brothers
And those who have a stone instead of a heart think I’m crazy
So pour me another cup so I can finally taste the bliss
It’s just a metaphor for those who understand
I’ve understood what good is in the light of my heart
And sincerity alone keeps us from error
Actions only matter by their intentions, each according to their aim
Love the other no matter the cost and fight for oneself
Buried in my chest is the treasure of the just
If there’s enough for one, let’s share, there’s enough for all
Chorus (x4):
Love, an ocean without bottom, without shore
It’s the secret hidden in the heart of the wise
For all eternity you’ve tied
The wonderful story of humanity
And in truth, who are you, Love, you whom I seek so much
I’ve seen so many mirages that from afar bore your name
Answer, you are the hidden treasure, sought by the Lover and the Beloved
But only those who are in love with you know it
I want to be among those whose faces bear the mark of Your closeness
Their hearts moan and you fill them with the secret, the honey of this life
You burn and you heal at the same time the pains
And the words fail me to dare say
That you are the source of all things
For all eternity these words are engraved in my heart
I love you, I love you, I love you, O Love
Be sure as the sun and the moon tear the sky
In each of their passes
Love is the crown of deeds
Make me a King so I can give the pact
Make me a King so I can give this pact
Chorus (x4):
Love, an ocean without bottom, without shore
It’s the secret hidden in the heart of the wise
For all eternity you’ve tied
The wonderful story of humanity
