Le Corbeau Et Le Renard
Abrial Patrick
The Crow and the Fox
Master Crow, perched on a tree,
Held in his beak a cheese.
Master Fox, enticed by the smell,
Spoke to him in about these words:
"Hello, Mr. Crow.
How pretty you are! How beautiful you seem to me!
Honestly, if your song
Matches your plumage,
You are the Phoenix of the hosts of these woods."
At these words, the Crow felt overjoyed;
And to show off his beautiful voice,
He opened a wide beak, letting his prey fall.
The Fox seized it, and said: "My good Sir,
Learn that every flatterer
Lives at the expense of the one who listens to him:
This lesson is worth a cheese, no doubt."
The Crow, ashamed and embarrassed,
Swore, but a little too late, that he wouldn't be caught again.
