Golden Advice

I was a little boy when my old man died;
There was so much misery, that my mom and I
Ate crying the dirty and hard bread
That in times of misery my hand begged for.
My poor little old lady washing other people's clothes
Broke her back at the foot of the washbasin,
For meager coins with which she barely calmed
The cruel bitterness of our situation.

I grew up carelessly, and in my youthful years
I took the path that seemed best to me...
I mingled with tango dancers, I got drunk with drinks,
And the best of my friends when he could, sold me out.
I became conceited; I ended up behind bars
And not a single friend has come to visit me as a prisoner,
Only the emaciated and beloved face of my mother
Pressed against the bars to be able to kiss me.

That's why, friend, after so many disappointments,
No one convinces me with friendship phrases;
Today I live with my mother, I want to sweeten her years
And I want to make her noble old age happy.
I feel so happy next to my dear mother
It's the best love that the heart has.
That one, which is a love that no one can take from me,
A love that doesn't deceive and knows no betrayal.

To you, friend, who are so young, I will give you a golden advice:
Leave parties and revelry... It will never weigh on you,
Take good care of your little old lady, because a mother is a treasure;
A treasure that when lost, another like it will not be found.
And don't be like those who spend on pleasures
And forget about their mother, and don't care about her pain;
They kill her with grief and only when she dies,
They regret it, cry for her, and understand her worth.
