El Legat Del Pastor
Albert Pla
The Legacy of the Shepherd
I've always been a shepherd
I have a hundred goats and a bag
Oh lay kai oh lay kai rai carai
One day while tending the flock
In the vast meadows of Pallars
The afternoon was gray and the sky gray and damp
It announced a storm, it announced bad weather
Oh lay kai oh lay kai rai carai
And suddenly a loud thunder and a big flash
And the goats ran down the mountain
Frightened, scared shitless
But what are you doing, where are you going, but stop
Don't run, you'll get lost
Wait for me, I'm coming
Oh lay kai oh lay kai rai carai
And oh shit, I trip and damn, I fall
I fall, fall, fall right at the edge of a ravine
I've never found the branch to hold on to
And I slip, I tumble down the cliff
Oh lay kai oh lay kai rai carai
And I fall and roll and I crush myself right under it all
On a huge rock at the bottom of the ravine
Oh lay kai oh lay kai rai carai
And I'm down, crushed, dying
In a moment like this, you can count what can be said
All of you come here, come to me
Before I die
Listen to what I want to say
My daughters, one day this land will be yours
All the grass, all the meadows
All the fruits, all the crops
I've always lived in scarcity
But I can leave you some inheritance
All the trees, all the wheat
All the rivers, all the towns
My daughters, what do I leave you
That I'm dying right now
But don't cry for me, little goats
And keep moving on
Because today I'm throwing a party
It's my last afternoon and I'm throwing a party for everyone
And you are free
And from now on, you are free
You can do whatever you want, family
I'm the dad, I'm the mom
I'm the dad of the goats
But jump, jump, little goats
Run away to the mountains
And hide for a while in the woods
Rest, eat grass
But take this bag that I give you
And keep it
This old leather bag
That I've always carried on my back
I only give you this backpack
Maybe one day you'll need it
If you find the shepherdess
With beautiful eyes in the mountains
The shepherdess of the little goats
Preferred by the bucks and rams and lambs
And kids and ewes
The shepherdess of the mountains
Who makes coats from human skin
When the goats are cold, family
She's the mom and she's the dad
She's the mom of the goats
Baa baa baa, look where you see her
Send her my regards
That I'm dead, and if you want, you can go with her
Tending, jumping in the meadows
Tending, jumping in the grass
There are two things in life that I leave because I'm dying
There are two things in life that I leave, that's why I cry
The shepherdess of the mountains
And a flock of loose goats.
