El Amor Desolado
Alberto Cortes
The Desolate Love
I put in the effort and she brought the apathy
I the deep silence and she the words,
I the path and road and she the distance
I put in the eyes and she the gaze.
I wanted to hold water in my hands
And on the sand, I built my house,
I was left without hands, I was left without a home
I became a dark root and she the trunk and branches.
For love's account to add up
She brought the body, I, the body and soul,
She was all wind, I all mountain
I pure resin, and she pure flame!
One dark night, she left my house
My eyes were blinded so I wouldn’t see her,
To not follow her, I closed the windows,
Locked the doors to not call her back.
I put black roses on our bed
On her memory, I placed white roses,
And in the dim light of dawn...
I took my life!...to not kill her!
I gave it all, life, body, and soul
She, God knows, never gave a thing.
