Mi Árbol y Yo
Alberto Cortez
My Tree and I
My mother and I planted it
At the edge of the yard
Where the house ends
It was my father who brought it
I was five years old
And it was just a branch
When spring arrived
We fertilized the soil well
And covered it with water
With little pieces of wood
We made a barrier
So it wouldn't get damaged
My tree sprouted, my childhood passed
Today under its shade that grew so much
We have memories, my tree and I
As the years went by
And my pants got longer
Adolescence came to me
It was in the shade of my tree
A nap in the summer
Where I lost my innocence
Then came the time for studies
With frequent returns
But fully aware
A long journey was approaching
One-way ticket only
And that's how the absence came to me
My tree sprouted, my childhood passed
Today under its shade that grew so much
We have memories, my tree and I
Many years have passed
And finally I have returned
To my beloved homeland
And at the edge of the yard
There it was waiting for me
As one waits for a friend
It seemed to be smiling at me
As if wanting to tell me
Look, I'm full of nests
That tree we planted
About twenty years ago
When I was just a child
The one that sprouted and time passed
Half of my life stayed with it
Today under its shade, that grew so much
We have memories, my tree and I
