Sus ojos se cerraron
Alfredo Le Pera
Her Eyes Closed
Her eyes closed
Her eyes closed...
and the world keeps moving,
his mouth that was mine
no longer kisses me,
the echoes have faded
of his joyful laughter
and this silence is cruel
that hurts me so much.
I had the merciful
sweetness of his hands
that gave my sorrows
tenderness and kindness,
and now that I recall it
sunk in my heartbreak,
the tears I thought of
refuse to flow,
and I have no comfort
of being able to cry.
Why did life burn his wings so cruelly!
Why this sinister grimace of fate!
I wanted to shelter him, but death was stronger,
How it hurts me and deepens my wound!
I know that now strange faces will come
with their meager relief for my torment.
Everything is a lie, the lament is a lie.
Today my heart is alone!
Like hunting dogs
the treacherous sorrows
jealously chasing my love
galloped behind,
and hidden in the waters
of his good gaze
the lurking fate
marked its rhythm.
In vain I encouraged
feverish hope.
Pain sank its claws
into my raw flesh;
and while in the streets
in wild revelry
the carnival of the world
celebrated and laughed,
mocking destiny
stole his love from me.
