Cat of the Dog

Ever since I was a young man
I don't have a dog.
And now that I'm grown up
I still don't have one.
I had a small dog,
"wire-haired";
with what I earned
it died of hunger.
They go pulling a cart,
just skin and bones,
a dog, a little boy,
and an old countryman.
The three of them walk
covered in dirt,
and the three of them are thinking
what a damn life!
