Juan Copete
Alfredo Zitarrosa
Juan Copete
(Polka)
If straightening out wrongs
is not your concern
who's pushing you, Juan Copete?
If he who yesterday came in flip-flops
today rides in a fancy car,
grabbing positions, honors, and money;
if others get harsh treatment
and he gets the easy way out,
who's pushing you, Juan Copete?
If a scoundrel, with skill and laughter
amasses a fortune,
even though the public knows
where the money comes from,
and if, when investigated,
they turn the tables on him,
who's pushing you, Juan Copete?
If one journalist slanders
another journalist,
while at the same time calling him
wise, colleague, and friend,
if he cuts him down
with a sweet and gentle tone,
who's pushing you, Juan Copete?
If with cunning, Fabricio
manages to become a congressman,
and turns such a sacred position
into profit and gain,
if he loosens up when needed to tighten,
who's pushing you, Juan Copete?
If forgetting the constancy
imposed by duty,
sells his vote to power
for a piece of land,
and he's given importance
instead of being put in chains,
who's pushing you, Juan Copete?
In the end, I'll say just one thing,
and the rest is nonsense,
if those who should stop the wrongs
don't let the ball roll,
even if you spend your lantern
and they say:
If straightening out wrongs
is not your concern
still get involved, Juan Copete!
