Los dos criollos
Alfredo Zitarrosa
The Two Countrymen
I know a countryman and a little tree
that look like brothers because they're so alike:
both look straight ahead, same path,
both know they have the same destiny.
Larailairailala, larailaraila,
both look straight ahead, same path.
Leaning against the hill and the horizon,
one looks towards the town and the other towards the mountain,
even in their work they deserve each other:
one grabs the plow and the other flourishes.
Larailairailala, larailaraila,
even in their work they deserve each other.
Both had a nest, both were left
alone with their thorns, both stayed silent.
If these two countrymen were companions,
one went to the gallows and the other to the grave.
Larailairailala, larailaraila,
if these two countrymen were companions.
