Milonga de ojos dorados
Alfredo Zitarrosa
Milonga of Golden Eyes
(Milonga)
Milonga of golden eyes,
sing to the one I love;
your heart, companion,
musical and rhythmic,
go flying by her side
and tell her that I can't live.
She, like you, had*
eyes the color of gold;
looking at them, I almost cry
-you know well-, that day:
I never thought there existed
a woman with eyes like hers.
Don't say she's gone;
rather say that someday,
just like your melody,
singing in my ear,
she will feel the beat
of the love I once asked of her.
Milonga, you are witness
to my true love for her;
you don't have her hips
or that mouth of wheat,
but singing with me,
your eyes will speak to her of me.
Milonga of golden eyes,
fly singing to find her,
and if you manage to find her
-after having looked at her-
surrender, in love,
the heart I once offered her.
* In later versions, the order of the second and third stanzas is reversed.
