It Was God

I don’t know, No one knows
why I sing this fado in this pained tone
of sorrow and weeping
and in this torment, all this suffering
I feel my soul inside calming
with the verses that I sing.

It was God, who gave light to my eyes
perfumed the roses,
gave gold to the sun and silver to the moonlight.

It was God, who placed in my heart
a rosary of sorrows that I keep unraveling
and I cry while I sing.

If I sing, I don’t know what I sing
A mix of joy, longing, tenderness
and maybe love.
But I know that while singing,
I truly feel how much heartache hurts
and the tears on my face make me feel better.

It was God, who gave voice to the wind
light to the heavens,
and gave blue to the waves of the sea.

It was God, who placed in my heart
a rosary of sorrows that I keep unraveling
and I cry while I sing.

and placed the stars in the air...
and placed the stars in the sky,
and made the endless space,
gave mourning to the swallows.
Oh, and gave me this voice.

made a poet of the nightingale,
put rosemary in the field,
gave flowers to spring,
oh, and gave me this voice.

ahh, to me (3x)
