Fui Ao Mar Buscar Sardinhas
Amália Rodrigues
I Went to the Sea to Get Sardines
I went to the sea to get sardines
To give to my love
I got lost in the little windows
That peeked out from the steamer
Peeking out from the steamer
I saw the face of a French guy
And whatever happens
I’m going to the sea again
I went to the sea again
And on the steamer of the party
I didn’t see the French guy there
I came back all soaked
All hope jumped out of me
The sardine jumped from the sea
The flea jumped from the scale
No big deal, it wasn’t mine
I’m going to the sea to get sardines
I’ve already forgotten about the French guy
The idea isn’t mine
Neither mine nor yours
Things I have in my mind
After going to the sea
Did sand get in
Where it shouldn’t have gone?
It might not make sense
The verse might not fit
But what I’ve been laughing at
You wouldn’t even want to know
It’s not for guessing
That I don’t like riddles
You already know I went to the sea
And I went to get sardines
Sardine swimming in the sea
Must be feeling pretty good
It’s got water, knows how to swim
I wish I could be a sardine!
