A Canção da Rosa Branca
António Pinto Basto
The Song of the White Rose
I think of you at the break of dawn
And when the day is coming to an end
You never forget me, even while sleeping
I dream of the joy of loving you like this!
Before seeing you, fallen flower from the sky
I can't even remember how I lived then
I don't dare to bear life anymore
Living a day without thinking of you
Oh white rose
Delicate and pure
What white ideal
What lovely color
You resemble a star
That fell from the sky
That landed for me
On the blooming rosebush
If your illuminated and chaste gaze
Rests in my eyes, reflecting the sky
The more I flee, the more I move away
The closer I see your gaze to mine!
Oh white rose
Luminous and alive
Beautiful elusive rose
My fatal love!
Only angels
Can create alone
With heaps of ermine
A rose like yours!
When this life peacefully fades away
Remembering how much I loved in vain
Oh disdainful one, what saddens me the most
Is thinking that I forget you then!
Oh white rose
My first love
You have no flowerbed
You have no garden
Why do you call me
Why don't you answer
And why do you hide
Calling for me?
But under the tomb, my love doesn't end
You'll see, my lady, if I hear your sighs
I'll open my eyes to see you again
Die once more if I don't see you!
Oh white rose
Why did you call me?
Why did you steal all the faith I had?
Calm and cold
Like the moonlight
What whiteness in you
What misfortune in mine
