Mestre Alentejano
António Pinto Basto
Alentejo Master
Land of big bellies
Where there are so many fat folks
They call soup açorda
And they call açorda migas
They call reasons songs
Milhaduras are tips
Maleitas are suitcases
Instead of slopes, they say cliffs
Instead of whips, they say spankings
And acorns are boletas
Soft land is a mess
To leave is to bounce
To throw away is to toss
Leather strip is a strap
A pot with a plant is a flower pot
Carpenter is a woodworker
And the shack is a big cabin
And they call gardens hortejos
Baskets are cabanejos
And wheat is called bread
In the rest of Portugal
No one says such words
The lowlands are called vais
A haystack is a frascal
Dressing well seems wrong
They call oats barley
And a big slap is an earful
A big basket is a gorbelha
A lazy mare is red
A 'Isabel' mare is sweet
When a guy is sick
They quickly say he’s dead
And they call every stream a garden
They call everyone a dude
Wearing baggy clothes is common
By chance, it’s a mess
And they call a bag a talego
And even in the richest classes
Being a dandy is being a sissy
Being from Beira is being Galician
Pigs are measured by rods
And fish is sold by the kilo
And we’re amazed to hear them
Using such rare ways
They call fields relvas
Sometimes, I don’t know why
And they address you as vomecê
People I hold dear
I don’t want, they say I don’t want
I don’t know, they say I don’t know.
