Milonga para la lluvia
Ángel Parra
Rain Milonga
I love to watch the rain fall,
fighting with the dark clouds,
witnessing how they fall in love,
the raindrops on the dirt.
I like to start a fire,
and heat up milk for my date,
so the logs can burn down
until they turn to ashes.
I don’t like the memories
that the storm brings along:
death, pain, rough times
that I sometimes had to face.
I also don’t like the river
that sweeps away the crops,
though it doesn’t belong to me,
I've dedicated my years to it.
I, who have no horse
or dog to whistle for,
better off watching the rain
so I can forget it all.
If I wake up suddenly
in the early morning light,
if the calm has finally come,
I’ll step out to find a way.
I like and don’t like
the verses that life gives,
the night never delivers
a path to the dawn.
