El Porteñito
Ángel Villoldo
The Porteño
I am a son of Buenos Aires,
by the nickname 'The little Porteño',
the most compadrito creole
born in this land.
When a tango on the guitar
strums with a companion
there is no one in the whole world
who dances better than me.
There is no one like me
to make women fall in love,
pure talk of opinions,
pure edge and nothing more.
And when I make the approach
I size her up completely
making sure of the stew
with the wind that will come.
I am the terror of the underworld
when I enter a dance,
because I respect none
of those present at the gathering.
And if someone gets cocky
and comes acting tough
I send him flying
to find out who fooled him.
When the wind is scarce
I tell a story to my girl
who is the most cunning girl
who stepped in the southern neighborhood.
And as if from heaven
the nickel falls into my pocket
and to the rhythm of an organ grinder
I dance the tango to her 'health'.
