Smile
One day I’ll meet God
And with a smile on my face, I’ll tell Him that, despite everything, I’m doing great
That I laughed at funerals, cried at weddings
That kites are crawling, you fall for cobras
Because human contact is like sandpaper
I rub it hard against the scaffolding in my head
A building under construction, a vacant mind
But the footprints remain in the concrete on the road
A six-year-old girl, with a giant smile
She comes up to me and says
Did you know my dad’s up in the sky just like yours?
My legs are shaking, I wish I were older
But maybe she is
Of course, she’s older than me
Because she knows what’s important
Just as long as you
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
You knock me down, but I’ll never stop
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
And it hurts, but it hurts more if I don’t
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
You knock me down, but the more you do, the more I’ll
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
The more I’ll smi-i-i-i-le
Now I’m out on the street playing hopscotch
I’m not old enough, but (I didn’t know)
Bruises and scratches, hands and knees
Face like a slap (Fell off the wall)
What’s the age to be an adult?
Prada glasses (I’ll just lose them)
Don’t worry, Mom, I’m not coming home
I’m a stray
The corners of my mouth go up and up
And they climb my face and jump
I just do
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
You knock me down, but I’ll never stop
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
And it hurts, but it hurts more if I don’t
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
You knock me down, but the more you do, the more I’ll
Sm-i-i-i-i-le
The more I’ll smi-i-i-i-le
I’m out on the street, playing hopscotch
I’m not old enough, but (I didn’t know)
Bruises and scratches, hands and knees
Face like a slap (Fell off the wall)
What’s the age to be an adult?
Prada glasses (I’ll just lose them)
Don’t worry, Mom, I’m not coming home
I’m a stray
And I just smi-i-i-i-le
