Balladi Olavinlinnasta
Annikki Tähti
Ballad of Olavinlinna
On the island of a rushing stream stands Olavin's castle
And in its thoughts, it gazes into the black stream.
It once protected the land with strong stone walls
When the waves of time brought their distress.
The music of the strait's harp has fallen silent
And the black ram of the castle is also gone.
Now the castle tells you a long-preserved legend
If you only understand its sighs.
Thus the castle tells: on a stormy night, the gate was opened
And men rushed into the castle in pursuit.
When the battle paused at dawn, the betrayal was then investigated
The reason, it was claimed, was the modest Viena maiden.
With tearful eyes, she silently received her sentence
And was walled in behind the dungeon's wall.
The innocent maiden carried the secret beyond the stone
When her beloved was the guilty one.
But from the maiden's tears soon sprouted a rowan tree
Its white flowers rose, breaking the wall.
Into its berries, a pure glow from the heart was given
By the greatest power of love.
Now the wind still sings the innocent maiden's song
As the rowan tree broke on the stormy night.
Only the legend remains, as told by Olavin's castle
And now you understand its sighs.
