La Pajarera
Arley Perez
The Birdcatcher
When the sweet season arrives
Where the birds sing joyfully
Come on, my dear little rose
Let’s listen to these sweet songs
Here I bring the nets, little rose
To see how many I can catch
Little birds that sing so cheerfully
They’ll fetch a good price, you’ll see
A goldfinch has fallen
A wild bird has fallen
A couple of sparrows have fallen
The hawk is now a prisoner
When I go to Mexico, little rose
To sell them in the capital
Five bucks will be the lowest price
That they can go for over there
If a lady asks you as you pass
If they’re wild little birds
You’ll tell her they’re not from here
That you brought them from the hot lands
Little rose is leaving now
She bids farewell with joy and care
I’m the birdcatcher, folks
Who’s going with her?
