A Quien Engañas Abuelo

Who Are You Fooling, Grandpa
Who are you fooling, Grandpa, I know you're crying
While Dad and Mom are resting up high
You never told me how, nor when it would be
But there are two crosses on the hill that remind you of it
The old man bows his head, stroking the boy's hair
He says, you’re right, son, hate has changed everything
The workers have gone far away, the field is left behind
I’m running out of strength, the plow weighs me down
And you’re just a kid trying to keep the farm going
The muleteer Chucho tells me, the one who lives by the reeds
That some get killed for being conservatives, others for being liberals
But what does that matter, Grandpa, what really counts?
My folks were so good, they never harmed anyone
I only understand one thing, before God we’re all the same
They show up during elections, those guys they call leaders
Promising schools and bridges where there are no rivers
And the farmer's soul gets caught up in party colors
Then he learns to hate even his good neighbor
All because of those damn politicians by trade
Now I understand you, Grandpa, for God's sake, stop crying
