Oración De Un Padre
Arturo Benavides
A Father's Prayer
Give me, oh Lord,
A son strong enough
To know when he is weak
And brave enough
To face himself
When he is afraid.
A son who is proud and unbending
In honest defeat,
Humble and generous in victory.
Give me a son who will never bend his back
When he should stand up straight,
A son who will know you...
And know himself,
Which is the cornerstone of all knowledge.
Lead him, I pray,
Not on the easy and comfortable path,
But on the rough road,
Stung by difficulties and challenges, there,
Let him learn to stand firm in the storm
And to feel compassion for those who fail.
Give me a son whose heart is clear,
Whose ideals are high,
A son who masters himself
Before he seeks to master others;
A son who learns to laugh
But also knows how to cry,
A son who moves towards the future
But never forgets the past.
And after you have given him all that,
Add, I beg you,
Enough sense of humor,
So he can always be serious,
But not take himself too seriously.
Give him humility,
So he can always remember
The simplicity of true greatness,
The impartiality of true wisdom,
The gentleness of true strength.
Then, I, his father, will dare to whisper:
I have not lived in vain
