19 Rebellions
[News 1:]
In the detention center, the blood trail raised fears
especially among the families of the inmates, of a violent takeover.
In October '92, 340 men from the São Paulo police SWAT team
stormed cell block 9 of the detention center.
They were trying to control a riot
that started after a fight between rival gang leaders.
111 inmates were executed.
The images of the massacre were seen worldwide.
[News 2:]
At that time, 111 inmates were executed.
Today's rebellion hit 17 prisons across the state.
[Rap:]
...? with me, in the faith of a thug
The black man always has the enemy in front
The racist cops, more than anyone
The favela's a hell, Oh Jerusalem
Mourn, endure, face the battle
Life's violent, walking on a razor's edge
The flaw, the gap always existed
In all power, all over Brazil
I don't know how to express, don't know how to speak
The hate stuck inside makes you cock your gun
And aim at the head of those who always robbed you
Always humiliated you, the son of a doctor
Only if it's my way, my point of view
I don't want anything of yours, just ask for justice
If you want to find me, you can separate, you can prepare
[Chant:]
Hey! Damn good
Hey! Damn good
[Instrumental]
... ... ... ?
It's really significant that people inside Brazilian prisons
who live in horrific overcrowded conditions
were able to organize massive simultaneous rebellions
in 19 different prisons.
In '92, 111 inmates were massacred by the Brazilian police
during a rebellion attempt.
9 years later, no one has been held responsible for those deaths.
These new rebellions in 2001
clearly demonstrate the weakness of the state
and the power people have when they organize.
Now we wait for the inmates and other Brazilians
to further direct this power to raise radical social change.
[Chant:]
Hey! Damn good Hey!...
Hey! Damn good
Hey! Damn good
So, if we look at the power we have in our hands
It's like the inmates in São Paulo who showed the state's weakness
Now we just need to want to use this power out here through
radical organized social action, organized, organized, organized, organized
organized! organized! organized! organized! organized!...
