A La Noche La Hizo Dios
Atahualpa Yupanqui
God Made the Night
God made the night
so that man can conquer it
going through a dream
as if it were a street.
Talking with a friend
hearing a song in the air
seeing love entangled
in the mist of the parks.
Or guessing a poem
that nobody ever wrote
God made the night
so that man can conquer it.
The night has a secret
and my heart knows it
no matter how much I want to hide it
with the velvets of the air.
A guitar told me
deep well of saudades
I learned it in those stories
that the transhumants tell.
I read it in the red wine
that burns in the early hours
I saw it shine inside my chest
distilling solitudes.
The night has a secret
and my heart knows it
god made the night
so that man can conquer it
