El Carrero
Atahualpa Yupanqui
The Cart Driver
I've been breaking horses
Once for my homeland
No one came with me
No one opened the gate
I used to be a horse tamer
Now I go with the cart
The colts didn't break me
That round has tired me out
Calmly and serenely
Without feeling, I make the leagues
My oxen go very slowly
And I have plenty of patience
Many pass at a gallop
And some at a medium pace
I don't envy anyone
Who knows how the round is
Nice life for the cart driver
For those who don't have a homeland
