Coplas Oaxaqueñas
Augusto Bracho
Oaxacan Verses
If my memory serves me well
I'll sing modern verses
And I'll tell you a story
That yesterday I left hell
Today I placed myself in glory
To get through the winter
I'm the devil who has arrived
Even if you can't see me
I'm not asking for credit
Nor for food
I don't sing like a madman
About all the pleasures
With my singing I provoke
Joys and desires
I come to sing a little
Let the women come closer
I would like to sing loudly
But my chest can't handle it
With the dust of the road
My throat dries up
To improve my life
I fell in love with death
And I ran into good luck
Because I made her my beloved
Now I feel very strong
Because I have her birthed
If I overstep in something
Just pretend not to notice
And whoever the shoe fits
Let them buckle it
Seeing myself so ruined
I went to Tuxtepec
And shortly after arriving
I found some luck
I haven't taken advantage of it
Because I wasted it
When I had money
They called me Don Nicolás
Now that I have nothing
You just call me Colás
I'm a bull without horns
I tell you with determination
There's no woman who is ugly
Or Quetzal that has an owner
If you don't know, don't get involved
Under the Oaxacan sky
To the one who went out to dance
My heart follows her
Tell me what her name is
I ask where she lives
I say goodbye, but I'll be back
To show my worth
My dark-skinned one, don't be afraid
You have my support
You see how much, peppermint
You'll add flavor to the broth
Everyone says goodbye
But not like mine
On the tip of my tongue
I carry the Virgin Mary
