El Niño Que Miraba El Mar
Luis Eduardo Aute
The Boy Who Watched The Sea
Every time I see that photograph
That escapes the cliché of the family album
I look at that boy who acts as a lookout
Scanning beyond the end of the sea
Still echoing in his head is the bombardment
Of a relentless dragon war
His gaze remains hidden but I see
What his eyes see because I am him
And I would give what I've lived
To sit by his side
To see myself in his future
From all my past
And looking into his eyes
Ask him absorbed
If he discovers his executioner
Reflected in my eyes
While he sees me looking
At that boy who watched the sea
That boy oblivious to the passing of hours
And who is setting his clock in motion
Is unaware that he harbors the evil of dawn
That evil of the animal that I already am
Before him, dark hours of shipwrecks
Accumulate graves by the pier
And he suspects that this sea is an omen
That on the other side another dragon awaits
