The Commandments
Yeah, people need commandments to survive
so they keep making new ones to pass down.
To the world that will come after them and to their heirs
because with commandments, it really is easier to die.
I learned in school: No one should lie
and so I was completely sure: No one would cheat.
But over thirty years, I learned to understand
that commandments are made just to be broken.
Preaching water - drinking wine, that's how the laws stand
and those who still demand morality are just stirring up trouble.
So I felt forced to create my own
Ten commandments for my life as my last weapons:
Stand tall - when others sit down
Be the wind - when others sweat.
Shout louder - when others are silent
Show yourself in hide and seek.
Never pretend to be someone else
When hurt, don’t cry anymore.
Have hope while drowning
Don’t sink into wealth.
Make an enemy out of a foe
Stand in solidarity with the weak.
And I’ve never broken them except for one commandment:
When hurt, I sometimes cry, which I forbade myself.
