Um Homem Na Cidade

Carlos do Carmo Carlos do Carmo

A Man in the City

I grab the dawn
Like a child would do
A rosebush intertwined
A vine of hope too
Just like the body of the city
That early morning rehearses the dance
Of those who, by sheer will
Never tire of the chance

I walk through the streets of this Moon
That ignites desire in my Tejo
I am the man of the city
Who wakes up early and sings
And, for the love of freedom
With the city, he rises and clings

I stroll down the dazzling road
Of the full Moon in Lisbon
Until the Moon, so in love
Grows in the sail of the canoe
I’m the seagull that conquers
All the bad weather at sea
I am the man who carries
The tide, a crowd in a spree

And when I grab the dawn
I gather the morning like a flower
By the edge of a heartache
A blue daisy in its power
The daisy of freedom
That loves me like no one else
The daisy of this city
That cares for me, that cares for me well

In my hands, the dawn
Also opened April's flower
The fearless, fragrant bloom
With the scent that the sea empowers
The beloved flower of Lisbon
That wished me ill, but now loves me well.
