No Teu Poema
Carlos do Carmo
In Your Poem
In your poem
There is a blank and immeasurable verse
A breathing body, an open sky
A window leaning towards life
In your poem, there is the silent pain deep down
The step of courage in a dark house
And, open, a balcony to the world
There is the night
The laughter and the voice restored in the light of day
The feast of Our Lady of Agony
And the weariness
Of the body falling asleep in a cold bed
There is a river
The fate of those born weak or strong
The risk, the anger, and the struggle of those who fall
Or who resist
Who conquer or fall asleep before death
In your poem
There is the cry and the echo of gunfire
The pain I know by heart but do not recite
And the restless sleep of those who fail
In your poem
There is an Alentejo chant
The street and the cry of a fishwife
And a boat sailing at full speed
There is a river
The song in united voices, certain voices
A song of a single letter
And a single destiny to embark
At the dock of the new ship of discoveries
There is a river
The fate of those born weak or strong
The risk, the anger, and the struggle of those who fall
Or who resist
Who conquer or fall asleep before death
In your poem
There is the burning hope deep down
There is everything else that still escapes
And a blank verse waiting for the future
