Yo Te Bendigo
Carlos Gardel
I Bless You
The rooster sounded the reveille,
from afar a dog barked in response
and the outskirts, upon waking up,
greeted the new day...
A car passed by in the distance...
Like a sentinel whose guard duty ended,
the flickering light of a street lamp
went out like a lament.
The strumming of the guitar broke the silence,
and through its strings, pain passed by weeping,
while a voice, tearing apart with sorrow,
sang in this way its cruel pain:
'I bless you despite the harm you've done to me,
even if other arms caress and embrace you,
for there is no room for resentment
in the heart that you once filled with light and love!...
But if with pain
you come to cry
at the memory of the love
that I knew how to give you,
think that I forgive you,
my heart
and the soul that suffered for you
bestows its blessing upon you.'
The rooster sounded the reveille.
As a reproach to the loving blessing,
the dog barked and with a song
the light died from the street lamp...
But the 'I bless you'
that was ripped from the depths of his chest
by the guitar went up to the sky
and hid in a star...
