Stabat Mater (Latin)
The sorrowful mother was standing
Tearful near the cross
While her son was hanging
Whose grieving soul
Saddened and sorrowful
Was pierced by a sword
Oh how sad and afflicted
Was that blessed
Mother of the only begotten
Who mourned and grieved
And trembled when she saw
The punishment of her glorious son
Who is the man who would not weep
Seeing the mother of Christ
In such agony?
Who could not be saddened
To behold the pious mother
Suffering with her son?
For the sins of his people
She saw Jesus in torment
And subjected to lashes
She saw her sweet offspring
Dying and abandoned
As he gave up his spirit
Oh mother, fount of love
Let me feel the force of your sorrow
Make me mourn with you
Make my heart burn
In loving Christ, God
So that I may please him
Holy mother, grant this
Fix the wounds of the crucified
Firmly in my heart
Of your wounded son
Who deigned to suffer so much for me
Share your pains with me!
Make me truly weep with you
Mourn the crucified
As long as I live
Stand near the cross with you
Freely join you
In mourning I desire
O illustrious virgin of virgins
Do not be harsh with me now
Let me weep with you
Let me bear the death of Christ
His passion's fate
And recall his wounds
Let me be wounded by his wounds
Intoxicated by this cross
For the love of the son
Inflamed and kindled
May I be defended by you, virgin
On the day of judgment
Let me be protected by the cross
Fortified by Christ's death
Nourished by grace
When my body dies
Grant that my soul
May be given the glory of paradise
Amen
