Ut Queant Laxis (Latin)
So that your servants may sing
With loosened voices
The wonders of your deeds
Cleanse the guilt from our stained lips
Holy John
The messenger of the great
Olympus
Announced that you would be
Born to your father
And revealed the order
Of your life
He, doubtful of the heavenly promise
Gave forth the notes
Of ready speech;
But you, born of a barren womb
Reformed the organs of speech
The citizens of heaven
Praise you with hymns
O God, simple and threefold
We humbly pray for your forgiveness
Spare the redeemed
Lying in the closed
Womb of your mother
You sensed the King
Remaining in the chamber
Hence, by the merits
Of the parent and the child
Both mysteries are revealed
May honor be to the Father
And to the Son begotten
And to you, the equal
Virtue of both
May the Holy Spirit
God eternal
Be forever in every age. Amen
