El testamento

In this my testament
that I write with one foot outside
that I write with one foot inside
of this world and whatever comes.

I will distribute my goods
I will divide my inheritance
into six equal portions
as it is now listed here.

A sixth I leave to the bishop
to expand his church
but I don't know why I do it
if it's almost never full.

Another sixth to the doctor
so he can expand his knowledge
and so when his patients die
his conscience won't be troubled.

Another sixth to the single ladies
for perfumes and silks
and an altar to Saint Anthony
where more candles can fit.

Another sixth to the town hall
to invest in works
although later the mayor may do
whatever he pleases.

Another sixth to my patron
with whom I contracted a thousand debts
to see if she decides
to fix these leaks.

Finally, the other sixth
I leave for my epitaph
where it can be read
with good handwriting and clear.

Here lie the bones
because the bones lived
of a man whose anatomy
they couldn't even study.

Here lie the remains
of an arrogant politician
who didn't turn the other cheek
but was hit on both.

Who knew no jealousy
who had no prejudices
and so death came to him
in perfect and sound judgment.
Who didn't bathe in wine
his stomach and his misfortunes
and who in his eighty years
did not experience democracy.
