Por qué canto así
Celedonio Flores
Why do I sing like this
Because when I was a kid I was cradled in tangos
the maternal song that called for sleep,
and I heard the grumble of the bandoneons
under the grapevine of my poor patio.
Because I saw the parade of hardships
with my poor eyes open to cry,
and in that room of my good old folks
poverty had its best song...
And I became in tangos,
I was shaped in hatred, in sadness,
in the bitterness that poverty brings,
in mothers' tears,
in the rebellions of the strong who
have to fold their arms
when hunger comes...
And I became in tangos,
because it's brave, strong,
has something of life,
has something of death...
Because I loved a lot, because I was deceived,
and I spent my life shuffling dreams...
Because I am a tree that lived without flowers,
because I am a dog without an owner...
Because I have hatreds that I never speak of,
because when I want to, I bleed in kisses...
Because I loved a lot and was not loved in return...
That's why I sing so sadly, that's why!
