L'Amour Et La Guerre
Charles Aznavour
Love and War
Why would I go to war again
After what I've seen, with what I know?
Where are the heroes of the past now?
They went too far searching for the truth
No matter the spring, the storks return
How many times, with a heavy heart, I've seen them fly by
They rocked for me ancient daydreams
Illusions of a child that are now long gone
All the flowers are dead from our fathers' guns
Cornflowers, poppies, from a shattered garden
I understand now what I have to do
Don't count on me if you start this again
Everything we learn from the gaze of women
Neither fire nor iron can ever change that
For love - and only love - survives among the flames
I'll do what it takes to defend mine
Why would I offer my youth
When happiness might be just a step away?
I'm here to love you, I want to love you endlessly
So that the sun rises on our footsteps
