The Other Morning Songs
The greeting I bring you on this day
is the show of friendship that I give you;
if you are still asleep,
awake so you can hear my song.
I only come accompanied by my buddies,
who offer you their friendship just like me;
the mariachis, sleepless and chilly,
ask for something to warm us up.
Please, turn on the light, it costs you nothing,
I want to dedicate another song to you;
we're here waiting for you to open the door
and offer us a drink of liquor.
It's your saint's day and we've come to sing for you,
the night watchman listens to us attentively;
I beg you, I plead with you, I ask you,
invite us to come into the dining room.
The patrol car has passed by several times
and puts us in a difficult situation;
if they take us to jail, it's your fault
for not giving us a proper invitation.
I swear we didn't come to beg,
nor to receive your ingratitude,
but it's sad that we arrived and left
without raising a toast to your health.
The lights are on now, my buddies,
the saint's light heard us and got up;
be ready to run if they throw water
or any other liquid that stains our honor.
But look, the doors have opened,
enter, holy pilgrims, please,
and let's shout together: 'Long live, long live!'
and three cheers for the saint of today:
Hooray, hooray, bim-bom-bam!
The saint's, the saint's, hooray!
