Las Ciudades
Chavela Vargas
The Cities
I saw you arrive
And felt the presence of an unknown being;
I saw you arrive
And felt what I had never felt before.
I wanted to love you
And your love was not fire, not flame;
Distances separate the cities,
The cities destroy the customs.
I said goodbye
And you asked me to never, to never forget you;
I said goodbye
And felt the strange strength of your love again.
And my whole soul was covered in ice
And my whole body filled with cold
And I was about to change your world,
To change your world for mine.
I saw you arrive
And felt the presence of an unknown being;
I saw you arrive
And felt what I had never felt before.
I wanted to love you
And your love was not fire, not flame;
Distances separate the cities,
The cities, the cities, destroy the customs.
