Sus Ojos Se Cerraron
Chavela Vargas
Her Eyes Closed
Her eyes closed and the world keeps moving,
Her lips that were mine don’t kiss me anymore.
The echoes of her joyful laughter have faded away
And this cruel silence hurts me so much...
I had the gentle sweetness of her hands,
That gave my sorrows tender touches of kindness,
And now that I recall her, lost in my grief,
The tears intertwined refuse to flow,
And I don’t have the comfort of being able to cry...
Because her wings cruelly burned through life!
Because of that sinister grimace of fate...
I wanted to shelter her, but death had other plans,
Oh, how it hurts and deepens my wound.
I know now that strange faces will come
With their false relief for my torment.
Everything is a lie, the lament is a lie...
Today my heart is all alone!
Like hunting dogs, the treacherous sorrows
Jealously galloped behind her love,
And hidden in the waters of her kind gaze,
Death lay in wait, marking her rhythm.
In vain I feverishly nurtured a hope,
Pain has sunk its claws into my living flesh,
And while on the street in wild revelry
The carnival of the world celebrated and laughed,
Mocking me, fate stole her love...
