The Eagle

Once there lived an eagle, who could no longer fly
Once he soared in freedom, flying toward the sun in the sky
But circumstances brought him down, literally to the ground
And so he lived with his head down, until someone came around

The man looked at the eagle, wandering in circles, lost
And then he thought, this isn’t what God intended at all, at what cost?
So he raised him up with love, pointed up as he said
Boy, look up and fly, up there you’ll be free instead

But the eagle was sadly still used to his earthly place
And though he felt somewhere inside, he was meant for a higher space
His gaze returned to that old spot, where he felt so secure
And with a quick leap, he landed back on the ground, unsure

Still, the man couldn’t bear to see the eagle sitting there
Such a beautiful bird walking in circles, with wings to spare
So he gave it another shot, from a barn roof this time
But again the eagle quickly landed on familiar ground, in his prime

But the man was very patient, and he still didn’t give in
No, he took the eagle to a high mountain top, to begin
He looked the creature in the eye, and said again, fly, you can do it
And you know what happened next, after he said it

Suddenly the wings, powerful, began to rise and fall
Hope filled that eagle’s eyes, that this time he’d stand tall
And with a strong leap forward, he broke free and soared high
The man watched him with tears, until he flew above the sky

Okay my friend, you get it, that eagle is us, you see
Destined for a heavenly life, but are we really free?
Or are we tied to the earth, is something weighing us down?
Then we should look forward with hope, for change to come around

For God says, lift your head up, and give your burdens to me
I’ll teach you how to live heavenly, for in Jesus you’re free
So spread your wings and live, and honor me in the light
Here is rest and joy, and a beautiful, far-off sight.
