Romance de La Reina Mercedes
Concha Piquer
Romance of Queen Mercedes
A dahlia was taken care of in Seville
in the Monparsié park.
Dressed in a white mantilla
she looked like a tea rose.
From Madrid, with top hat and sideburns,
came a very courteous young man.
Who kissed Mercedes on the cheek
as the children are cousins.
A love idyll began to smile.
While they sing in a minor tone
by the edge of the Guadalquivir.
Maria de las Mercedes
don't leave Seville.
That the tuberose can change
the color of your cheeks.
Whether you want it or not,
even though you say nothing,
it's noticeable from your dark circles
that you are very much in love.
Little rose of Andalusia,
love that spread its nets,
and it may be that one day,
love will cost you your life:
Maria de las Mercedes.
One spring afternoon
Merceditas changed color.
And Alfonsito who was by her side
went and said to her: What's wrong, my love?
And just like a little lamp
the sovereign began to fade.
And the roses that were on her face
turned into porcelain.
And Mercedes died starting to live.
And in the Plaza de Oriente and sorrow,
all of Madrid went to mourn her.
Maria de las Mercedes
my most Sevillian rose,
because you leave my nets
overnight.
My wounds are from love
and my disappointment is from love,
seeing you leave life
at eighteen years old.
You go on the road to heaven
without a child to inherit you.
Spain dresses in mourning
and the King has no consolation:
Maria de las Mercedes.
