'A Finestra
Carmen Consoli
'At the Window
I'm always at the window and I see people walking down the street
Beautiful people, cheerful, lively, serious and seated
People dressed with pressed shirts and tight-lipped
'Turi, I want something, a snack, a lemon soda'
He replied: 'Giusi, when you were called Giuseppina,
you were running around with a granita'
'Turi, you've made a name for yourself and now that you're a big shot entrepreneur,
they'll teach you how to behave in high society'
I'm always at the window and I see people strolling around,
sitting on benches in the square, lighting a cigarette,
people who meet and say 'hello' with a nod,
people who leave, people who hug and then kiss,
people who tighten their belts, struggle and don't give up,
announce another winter without attending mass,
people who pretend to be busy,
but end up at a table set by someone else
Who do you have to talk to, you have no one else to think about
at least a little bit of clarity
'Let's go to work' an old man grumbles,
'we have the little one behind us or in front'
I say 'excuse me, this is my house and I stay where I want'
On Sunday morning from the church speakers
the voice of Father Coppola enters the houses, penetrates the bones
'sinners renounce those sins of the flesh
when the devil shows up, strengthen your defenses'
When the church square is filled with cars
out comes Saro Branchia, known as Re Leone
Father Coppola stutters and mumbles the sermon in three words
because his Majesty is about to take communion
Who do you have to talk to, you have no one else to think about
at least a little bit of clarity
'Let's go to the sea for a bit', an old man insists
'so you don't seem like a ghost'
I say 'excuse me,
but why do you have to stay here under my roof to insult me'
I'm always at the window and I see the different civilizations
that have existed, where Turks, Jews, and Christians shook hands,
so it was thought that 'Diversity is wealth'
times of beauty and poetry, of love and wisdom
Yesterday has been, maybe I could go back
if we find some good seeds to plant
In this land of fire and sea today I feel my heart speaking
and saying that things need to change
Who do you have to talk to, you have no one else to think about,
at least a little bit of clarity
Let's dance, take four steps and move just to have fun
I say 'With pleasure, is there a strange dance you'd like me to recommend!?'
