Canto da Paixão do Senhor
Coral Palestrina
Passion of the Lord's Song
On Thursday, Jesus with his disciples
Went from Bethany to Jerusalem
To celebrate Passover, Jesus with his friends
And suffer for our good
Before the supper, Jesus to his disciples
Washed their feet with great joy
During the supper, Jesus announced
With great pleasure his new commandment
It was bread and wine that Jesus gave to the disciples
"Eat the bread, it is my body," says Jesus
"Take, drink, this wine is my blood
It is my life, which I will give for you on the cross!"
After the supper, Jesus went up to the garden
And prayed for three hours
Sweating blood, with sadness and agony
Drinking the cup of the Father with determination
Judas arrived, leading a group
With deceit, he kisses his divine Master
Jesus says to him: "I know the falsehood
By this kiss that you have given me"
Then, the group goes to Jesus
To arrest him, the wickedness is too much
And so they lead Jesus, hands tied
To the house of Annas and Caiaphas
Oh you, oh you, you who pass by here
Look, tell me, who in this world has suffered more?
Oh you, oh you, you who pass by here
Look, tell me, who in this world has suffered more?
Peter, the disciple, brave, courageous
Had sworn fidelity to Jesus
Jesus had said: "Before the rooster crows
You will deny being a disciple of the truth"
Peter, from afar, followed Jesus
When in the palace courtyard he warmed himself
Before the rooster crowed once
Three times Peter had already denied his master
Jesus passed by where Peter was
Looked at him with truth and compassion
Peter recognized his great fault
And wept tears of immense contrition
Before the great council of the nation
The witnesses did not agree among themselves
Caiphas asks and then Jesus answers
"Why do you ask? I have always spoken clearly!"
Oh you, oh you, you who pass by here
Look, tell me, who in this world has suffered more?
Oh you, oh you, you who pass by here
Look, tell me, who in this world has suffered more?
