El Deseo De Clara
Fernando Delgadillo
Clara's Desire
Clara turned thirty
without leaving her parents' house
in the garden and in her room
everything had a touch of her intimacy
she never had more friends than her thirst for knowledge
and the days passed monotonously
until he came to appear one day
Clara didn't know him
she never saw him hanging around
he simply appeared
when he knocked on the door asking
'Is Mrs. Aurora here?
Excuse me, can I wait for her?'
he was a nephew from the town
and without thinking, she let him in
She opened the gate
her heart and while they waited
she started showing him the house
looking for a topic to talk about
she sat him on a couch and observed him
and sometimes listened
to the natural sound of that conversation
where loneliness could be heard
As the afternoon passed
they kept waiting for Mrs. to arrive
she must have stayed
with her husband at the hospital
'Mr. Samuel would still be sick'
they took so long to return
that she showed him her patio
her garden, her flowers
and he wanted to see them
Clara told him about things
that she had to hide from the family
her dad imagined people
in the house talking to him
When night finally fell
and the aunt didn't show up,
she showed him her room
and he was interested in staying there
He stood behind her and started
kissing her neck
while she quietly untied
the long attire of her loneliness
they told each other things
that only lovers say
private phrases that should only be whispered
and she surrendered to him at midnight
and he claimed the prize
and she told him it was just desire
and that he had been invited to stay
By the time dawn broke someone knocked
on the room's door
he covered himself with the blankets
and she opened the door to the hallway
her mom and sick father
found her naked and standing
she was alone in her room
is Clara getting sick too?
Clara shuddered
when she called out to him but he wasn't there
neither his warmth nor his scent nor anything
her voice was never heard again without reason
she must have thought he left
he left like morning dreams
disappearing with the light through the window
and she couldn't believe it didn't happen
